Teaching
My teaching philosophy is grounded in a commitment to working with students to gain knowledge and skills in contrast to lecturing at students. It resonates with Freire's (1970) belief that “knowledge emerges only through invention and re-invention, through the restless, impatient, continuing, hopeful inquiry human beings pursue in the world, with the world, and with each other” (p. 72). This is demonstrated in my classroom through:
1) connecting course content to student lives in concrete ways
2) providing mentorship that fosters individual student passions
3) resisting the banking model of education through innovative assignments that promote peer learning.
